This year on San Francisco Bay has already listed numerous deaths on the bay and in the waters just off the Golden Gate Bridge. SOAR has started an initiative to increase safety in the waters of San Francisco Bay. This program has created an experienced team of all volunteer staff to create a program unlike anything available anywhere else.

The training is unique in that instead of teaching boaters to recover a floating object in the water, this training will teach mariners to recover crew in the water. SCUBA divers will act as victims in the water and will be recovered using various techniques for recovering victims who are both able to assist in their recovery as well as techniques that may be used for victims who are unconscious or may be unable to assist in their recovery.

Another unique training aspect is that this course encourages boaters to bring their own sail or powerboats to the training day. The sailing instructors will

board the boats and distinctively tailor the training to meet the needs of the crew and the boat. This is done because every crew overboard recovery is different for every boat. So training needs to be tailor made for the boat and crew.

Our lead instructor is Mary Smith. She owns the Afterguard Sailing Academy of Oakland, California. In addition to her long history of sailing and sail instruction, she have been involved in previous crew overboard studies and training events that have included participants from around the world. She one of the best in the world to provide this training and she is providing these skills and numerous instructors free of charge.

There is no other place where sailors can obtain this type of individualized instruction for this price. And all proceeds go to support medical missions overseas through SOAR. SOAR has no paid staff members.
