SOAR
provides medical care to young sailors
SOAR
recently staffed a first aid station in Sausalito from July 8th
until July 12th of 2008. During this time volunteer EMTs, paramedics
and nurses provided medical care for young girls participating in
the Junior Womens doublehanded Sailing Championships on San
Francisco Bay.
The
sailing was challenging and the sailors tough. The competitors endured
numerous challenges and suffered a variety of minor injuries during
the event. The medical team treated lacerations, head and neck injuries,
hypothermia and other minor injuries. The following volunteers assisted
in this project:

SOAR assists with San Francisco Bay safety training
SOAR, in partnership with the Afterguard Sailing Academy, created
a one of a kind training event for sailors on San Francisco Bay.
The Crew Overboard (COB) event was a two-day event to teach local
sailors how to recover a person who has fallen into the bay. The
event was unusual in that it provided actual victim in the waters
of San Francisco Bay (swimmers in wetsuits and life jackets). The
participants then were trained on maneuvering the sailboats for
the best recovery position and numerous technical ways to pull the
victim from the water.
The event was a fundraiser for SOAR and for the Afterguard Sailing
Academy youth programs. This event required numerous volunteers.
